Our Family’s First Year with Goats, Eggs, and Plenty of Blue Ribbons

What a whirlwind week it’s been at the County Fair! This was our kids’ very first year participating, and they completely knocked it out of the park—walking away as Novice Meat Goat Champion and Reserve Champion Showmanship. Not to mention, both of their Kiko goats proudly sported blue ribbons by the end of the week. If you’re considering a manageable entry into fair animals, I can’t recommend goats enough—they’ve been a perfect fit for our busy family, requiring far less attention than your average steer or cow.

My son also caught a scramble pig. We’re buzzing with excitement about breeding her and eventually raising her piglets for pork. We’re incredibly grateful to LSB Ranch and Show Pigs for providing the pigs.

While our focus was on the fair, life on the farm didn’t pause. Our Rhode Island Reds and Golden Sex Link hens hit full egg-laying maturity during all the excitement, and now we’re swimming in fresh eggs! Since we didn’t sell any during the fair, we have plenty on hand. If you want to enjoy farm-fresh eggs for breakfast, we’re offering them at $6 per dozen—just message me if you’re interested.

Looking ahead, we’ve separated ten Rhode Island Red hens with a rooster, paving the way to offer incubated full-breed chicks in about a month. If you’ve been dreaming of starting your own backyard flock with healthy, heritage breed chicks, stay tuned—there’s much more to come on our little homestead adventure!
