New Additions to the Herd

We recently purchased a breeding pair of Katahdin sheep lambs and a ram to add to our growing flock. Katahdin are hair sheep as opposed to a wool breed, so they will shed their winter coat. They are a meat breed and have the potential to produce lambs twice a year. They also complement the grazing habits of the cows and goats, as they will graze on the shorter grass that the others typically miss.

After watching and gaining confidence from the Shepherdess, we were ready to jump into raising sheep. She explains that sheep are more efficient per pound than cows in raising meat, as they can have up to four lambs per year and finish out well over a year before beef. They are also much easier to handle, especially for our fledgling farm.

Lamb will probably be available for sale by next summer. If you're interested, please contact sixmilehomesteaders@gmail.com to reserve your lamb today.
