On February 1st, our farm experienced a delightful surprise: the arrival of our first baby goat of the year! According to Grandma Faye, this little one may be the first kid (baby goat) ever born in the farm's 100-year history.

When we bought her mother, Rose, we were aware that she might be pregnant. Rose had been around a buck and had previously given birth to multiple litters of kids. However, it wasn't until the last week of January that we noticed significant signs of her pregnancy, including changes in her udder and body.

That night, we moved Rose and Blanche to the manger to ensure a smooth delivery. The next morning, we were greeted by a fluffy, bleating newborn next to his mother. We named him Bud, after his mom, Rose (Bud). He is the typical goat kid, full of energy and loves to climb, jump, and explore. Fortunately, he prefers to stay close to his mom, especially as we’ve started taking him out to pasture on sunny days.

We have decided to keep Bud intact so he can breed him with our kids' 4-H project goats (more details in a future blog). Otherwise, things are really starting to pick up on the farm.
