There's something incredibly exciting about welcoming new animals to the farm, and this week, we did just that! We purchased four additional hogs from LSB Ranch to add to my son's scramble pig from the fair.

Expanding Our Hog Family

Adding these four hogs to our farm is not just about increasing our livestock. It's about creating a sustainable source of local food for our community. Each hog brings its own personality and charm. Watching them settle into their new home has been a joy. My son is particularly thrilled to have his scramble pig join this lively group. Together, they'll grow into healthy, happy animals.

In December, we plan to slaughter four pigs, offering pork for sale in halves and wholes. This is a fantastic opportunity for those interested in buying local food. We aim to provide high-quality, ethically raised pork. Knowing where your food comes from is essential, and we are proud to contribute to that transparency.

Breeding for the Future

In addition to our immediate plans, we are excited about the future of our hog operation. We intend to breed one of our females, allowing us to have more pigs available in the fall. This breeding program will not only expand our herd but also teach my son about animal husbandry and the responsibilities that come with it.

Creating a Sustainable Environment

One of the most rewarding aspects of raising hogs is the positive impact they have on our farm's ecosystem. As they root around, they create excellent compost for next year's garden. We regularly create wood chips for bedding. This not only keeps the pigs comfortable but also contributes to the composting process. Using the natural behaviors of pigs to enhance our soil health is a sustainable practice that benefits both our farm and the environment.

Looking Forward

As we embark on this new chapter with our hogs, I am filled with enthusiasm for what lies ahead.

Stay tuned for updates on our hogs and the delicious pork we’ll have available in December!
